Originally designed for competitive darts players from the British pub circuit (don’t ask ;-), and following experimentation, some of these feather shapes were found to fly well over longer distances when are also attached to arrows. Clout and flight archers, please take note.

Of course, smaller in size than “usual” tailplanes, some shapes feature severe angles, obtuse cuts and rounded rear ends. For such small sizes, the feathers produced by these jigs seem to generate more flight/wind noise than expected (something to seriously consider if you hunt). To ensure optimal performance, you may want to pay close attention to the straightness, taper (or barrel) shape, mass, spine, and FOC of your wooden handle. Bare shaft testing and matching is highly recommended to ensure consistency in all of your arrows before adjusting these feather shapes. If this is not possible for you to complete with wooden arrows, perhaps consider carbon fiber shafts before installing these feather shapes – the feather shapes cut by this template set will require your shaft to be perfectly adapted to your bow. Any instability or inaccuracy in the manufacturing of your arrows will only be amplified by these feather shapes. However, get it right and you will be rewarded with great results, I’m sure.

The overall shape of the jig has been specifically designed to keep your fingers away from the blade when using it. I like to keep my fingers attached to my hand, and I hope you do too.

Easy to use (see video) with a rotary cutter – place your nib on your cutting pad and the tip in the groove of the template, apply a little pressure to hold the template still and roll the blade around the shape starting with the back, move forward, cutting the quill and feather as you go. Keep your fingers away from the cutting path of the blade!
