Let’s start by making one thing clear: these types of models were never used in medieval times.
But working with long feathers after attaching them to the arrows with scissors, tape, glue and thread, try to cut them all to the same length, height, shape, etc. is a really difficult job to do.
So, following requests made many years ago by Dutch archers who shoot very heavy bows, these jigs were designed to eliminate much of that pain.
The process is exactly the same as in the video below, the only difference is that the feathers needed for these shapes are long. You may want to pay attention to your tail jig, if you use one.
Among other variations, the most popular competition styles are:
#35, Standard Arrow 6 inch
#36, Quarter Pound Arrow, 7.5 inch
#37, Livery Arrow, 7 3/8 inch
#41, New Amsterdam Arrow , 6 inches
#42, Arrow Crécy / Poitiers, 7 3/8 inches
Simply select your options from the drop-down menus. All height dimensions include the nib groove.
Easy to use (see video) with a rotary cutter – place your nib on your cutting pad and the nib in the groove of the template, apply a little pressure to hold the template still and roll the blade around the shape starting with the back, moving forward, cutting the quill and the quill as you go. For types with a trailing back point (#36, etc.), you will also need a small, sharp scalpel. Keep your fingers away from the cutting path of the blade!
